Hey sister! Over the past few weeks, we've walked through what it looks like to be set apart, navigate seasons of transition, and even count the cost of following Jesus. But today, we're shifting our perspective to ask a different question: what if we've spent so much time focusing on what we're leaving behind that we've forgotten the incredible treasures we're actually gaining? Following Jesus isn't just about surrender; it's about discovering that He truly is enough, and in Him, we find life abundantly!
More Than Subtraction, It's Divine Addition
It's so easy to unintentionally frame the Christian walk as a series of losses: "Don't do this. Give that up. Leave that behind. Count the cost. Carry your cross." And while there's truth in those statements, they're not the whole story. If all someone heard was what they had to lose, they might never discover the immeasurable gains! Jesus didn't invite us to follow Him to make our lives smaller; He invited us because He was offering us life – real, abundant life that the world promises but can never deliver. He didn't just rescue us from something; He rescued us for a relationship with Himself. And that, sweet friend, is where we find lasting joy.
Abundant Life: More Than Earthly Riches
When Jesus talks about abundant life in John 10:10, what does that actually mean? It's easy for our minds to drift towards the world's definition of abundance – material wealth, perfect circumstances, an easy life. But that's not the abundance Jesus promises. When we think of true abundance in Christ, our hearts turn to the fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. These are the lasting treasures that don't deteriorate or waste away. He desires to give us a life that is fruitful in His kingdom and long-lasting for eternity. This is a joy that isn't fleeting; it grows exponentially as we abide in Him. It's the kind of joy you feel but sometimes can't even explain.
Joy in the Midst of Hardship
This joy isn't circumstantial happiness. It's a deep-seated trust that allows us to find joy even when life is incredibly hard. When we understand God's character, we can focus not on the difficulties we face, but on the One holding us, carrying us, and loving us through it all. It completely changes our perspective. This joy is a gift from God, breathed into us, making it unshakeable by our external circumstances. As His Word says:
The joy of the Lord is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10
When we realize He is enough, we find our strength and joy in Him.
Intimacy Over Idols
Sometimes, we define holiness or righteousness by subtraction – taking things away from our lives that look like the world. This can quickly devolve into a works-based theology. God doesn't ask us to lay things down just for the sake of it; He asks us to lay them down because He wants our hearts. He wants intimacy with us. When we choose to trust Him and lay down an idol, we discover He replaces it with something far greater: Himself.
Sister, I can share from my own journey that giving up certain things was initially hard, but as I grew closer to Jesus, it became easier. It wasn't about willpower as much as it was about God changing my desires and affections. My heart posture shifted from trying to please people to genuinely desiring to please the Lord. When He asks us to give something up, it's because He knows it's better for us, and He wants to be everything for us. He wants us to rely on Him for all our needs, not go to anything else.
The Counterfeit of Escape vs. The Refuge of Christ
The world constantly offers us "escape" – through substances, endless scrolling, numbing out with entertainment. But these are counterfeits for the true refuge found in Jesus. While they might offer temporary relief, they ultimately lead to bondage because they never truly fulfill. They keep us running from the very things God wants to heal in us.
We are not designed to carry our burdens. God calls us to lay them at His feet, reminding us that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He wants to be our refuge, our source of peace, strength, and joy. When we lean into Him during moments of overwhelm, stress, or frustration, He doesn't just make the problem disappear; He invites us into His presence, where we find peace, joy, and freedom. This intimacy with Him transforms our desires, restoring us to Himself.
Jesus Himself is the Reward
Ultimately, following Jesus begins to feel less like giving something up and more like coming home. Jesus isn't just the way to abundant life; He is abundant life. The greatest reward we receive isn't just stored up for heaven; it's a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him right here, right now. It's in our everyday walk that we are constantly rewarded with His presence.
In His presence, there is fullness of joy. This isn't just a cliche; it's a transformative truth experienced through surrender. When you encounter God's presence in this way, it is wildly life-changing. There is nothing this world can offer that fills the void that only He can fill.
Knowing Jesus changes everything. It changes the lens through which we see our lives, cultivating a deeper dependence on Him. It reveals His incredible love for us and reshapes what we perceive as important. What we gain in Him is peace that we can't explain, joy that isn't dependent on our circumstances, and a profound contentment that the world can't offer or take away.
Perhaps today, you've been measuring your faith by everything you've left behind. Take a moment, sweet sister, and notice what Jesus has been giving you instead: more peace, more freedom, more dependence, more intimacy, more of Himself. That is never a losing exchange.
