It’s not about waiting for an audible voice or chasing dramatic signs. It's about growing in an intimate relationship with Him, walking in surrender, staying rooted in Biblical truth, and inviting wise Christian community to sharpen us along the way. Your Shepherd Knows Your Voice

It’s so easy for us to get stuck in our heads, isn't it? To overanalyze and strive to "get it right," especially when we genuinely want to honor God. But sometimes, in our striving, we miss the simple truth found in His Word. Jesus reminds us:

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27

This verse beautifully illustrates the intimate relationship Jesus desires with us. He’s the Good Shepherd, and we are His sheep. This isn't about perfectly analyzing every detail; it’s about a knowing, a recognition that comes from relationship. The more we lean into Him, the more familiar His voice becomes.

How Does God Speak? (It's Not Always a Burning Bush!)

So, if not an audible voice, how does God speak to us? It’s often much more subtle and woven into our everyday lives.

First and foremost, through His Word. As we spend time in Scripture, the Holy Spirit illuminates passages, bringing them alive in new ways. We might have read a verse a hundred times, but then one day, it speaks directly to our current situation, offering confirmation, comfort, or even gentle correction.

Then there’s the gentle whisper of the Holy Spirit. Think of Elijah in 1 Kings 19 – God wasn't in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but in a gentle whisper. This can feel like a quiet nudge, a thought that pops into your head that doesn’t quite feel like your own, a subtle tap-tap-tap. It's not a booming command, but a sweet invitation: "Don't send that text," "Call your mom," "Perhaps you should reconsider this path." We often dismiss these subtle promptings, waiting for something bigger, something more obvious. But what if we're missing Him in the quiet?

God also speaks through peace. If a decision is accompanied by deep anxiety or panic, that’s usually a red flag. God is not a God of confusion or chaos; He is a God of peace. As Colossians 3:15 reminds us, "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." Peace can coexist with difficulty, but it cannot coexist with panic. If anxiety is swirling, it’s not Him.

When Urgency Becomes a Red Flag

We live in a culture that shouts "now! now! now!"—instant gratification is practically a commodity. But God often operates at a different pace. Have you ever felt immense pressure to make a decision, a sense of urgency that screams, "If you don't act right now, you'll miss your calling!"? That feeling, that panic, is often a sign that we need to pause.

God doesn't operate in panic. He’s the God who made Abraham wait 25 years for a promised son. He's not suddenly going to require you to make a life-altering decision in the next four minutes or forfeit your destiny. If you don't know, stand still. As the Psalmist says, "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Our calling never changes – it is always obedience to Him. What we do may change, but our posture of obedience remains constant. If you don't know the next step, don't take it. Stay faithful where you are, and He will open and close doors according to His perfect will.

The Power of Sisterhood and Wise Counsel

One of the most profound ways God speaks to us, and clarifies our discernment, is through our Spirit-filled sisterhood. We often say that God has discipled us through our friendship – not just through sermons or podcasts, but through honest conversations, prayer, accountability, and wise counsel.

Where there is no guidance, a people fall, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14

Trusted friends who know you, love you, and most importantly, know Scripture, are an incredible gift. They can help identify blind spots, lovingly speak truth, and even help you differentiate between conviction (from the Holy Spirit) and condemnation (from the enemy). When you’re wrestling with a big decision, run it past one or two mature believers. Not seven different people until you find the answer you like (we've all been guilty of that!). But those who will love you enough to push back, challenge you, and point you back to Jesus. This sisterhood protects us from deception and self-reliance, sharpening our discernment in ways we can’t achieve alone.

4 Filters for Discernment

So, how can we practically discern God's voice in our daily lives? Here are four filters to run every "I think God is saying..." through:

1. Scripture: Does it align with what He's already said? God will never contradict His Word. He won't tell you to gossip and call it truth-telling. He won't tell you to leave your spouse for another and call it peace. If it doesn't align with Scripture, it isn't Him. This requires knowing His Word!
2. Character: Does it sound like Jesus? Jesus is kind, truthful, patient, and never shames or crushes. He convicts, but doesn't condemn. If the voice in your head is harsh, condemning, urgent, or mocking, that's not God.
3. Peace: Does peace rule here, or anxiety? As we mentioned, peace can coexist with something being hard (like a difficult conversation), but it cannot coexist with panic or anxiety. If it's anxiety, it's not Him. Peace isn't the absence of hard things; it's the presence of Him in the hard things.
4. Counsel: Have you sought wise counsel? Before acting on a "God told me," run it past one or two mature believers who know you, love you, and know Scripture. They are a gift to help you see clearly and wisely.

At the end of the day, sisters, discernment is really about becoming more surrendered. When our heart posture is "not my will, but Yours, Lord," He can take us anywhere. We don't have to perfectly understand every detail or fear making the "wrong" choice. His mercies are new every morning, and He is always working to straighten our paths and draw us closer to Him, regardless of the detours we might take. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.
