Overcome Self-Protection & Trust God: Find True Contentment

Have you ever found yourself orchestrating situations, telling yourself it’s just responsible, when in reality, it's a deep-seated need for safety? We're having a very honest, sister-to-sister chat about self-protection – how it forms, how it quietly dictates our relationships, and how it ultimately keeps us from the intimacy and peace we long for. Contentment, we've learned, blossoms where humility trusts God's leadership over our own attempts to self-guard.

My Journey from Guardedness to God's Grace

For so long, I (Satin) genuinely believed self-protection was wisdom. Growing up, a harsh but well-meaning father taught me to build walls. I felt I couldn't fully trust, especially male figures, and this wound shaped my view of God too. It’s hard to admit, but I lived life from a place of always being on high alert, always in control. Even after my relationship with my earthly father was restored, the pattern of self-protection lingered.

God, in His mercy, is teaching me a new way to live: under His protection, rather than my own. This isn't a flip-of-a-switch deliverance, but a sanctification process. We receive initial deliverance, then we must daily choose to spend time in His Word, letting His voice rewrite those old narratives.

The Subtle Ways Self-Protection Shows Up

Self-protection is a master of disguise. For me, it showed up subtly as control in my marriage. My husband is kind and faithful, yet I struggled to trust him. My mom even noticed my guardedness. It wasn't about him; it was my past wounds telling me to manage outcomes, control conversations, and make all the decisions to feel safe and 'responsible.'

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5

Instead of creating safety, this striving produced an atmosphere of tension, carefulness, and emotional eggshells in my home. My instinct to protect myself was costing me intimacy and peace.

Surrender: The Path to True Freedom

The turning point for me wasn't a self-help book. It was an invitation from the Lord to surrender. I thought I was surrendering my marriage, but He clarified: "Surrender your heart. There's so much fear, so much mistrust." Surrender isn't weakness; it's the ultimate act of trust. It's truly humbling.

This reorientation has been wild. I'm learning to release my grip on self-preservation. Peace is replacing striving, and I'm finding freedom in Holy Spirit. I'm doing a lot less than I used to, delegating more, and it's incredibly freeing. This doesn't happen overnight or without effort; it's a daily, intentional choice to surrender our hearts to Him.

The Fruit of Surrender

In this season of surrender, I've found deep contentment. When you commit to daily time with God – abiding in Him – He reveals things, makes the crooked ways straight, and brings redemption. He knows when we’re ready, and He guides us gently, step by step.

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” John 15:4

We cannot produce spiritual fruit without staying connected to the Vine. It's a beautiful, ongoing journey of dying daily to our flesh, constantly choosing His ways over our own. His ways are always, always better. He is trustworthy, He is safe, and He is leading us well.
