Trade Striving for Surrender & Joy in Christ | Spirit-Filled Girl Talk

What if change didn’t have to be hard, heavy, or hustle-driven? What if transformation came not from striving or doing more, but from receiving more of God’s love?

In this episode, we sit down with health restoration and joy coach Nicole Roth to explore what it looks like to move from striving to surrender—and how God’s grace changes everything.

When Striving Fails

For years, Nicole lived in performance mode: serving, leading, doing “all the right things,” yet feeling joyless and spiritually barren. On the outside she looked strong, but inside she was exhausted, ashamed, and longing for something more.

Her breaking point came after deep personal loss and health struggles. In that dark place, God whispered a life-changing question: “Are you being led — or are you being driven?”

That night, Nicole wrestled with God, desperate to finally understand His love. In a moment of surrender, she realized the truth: salvation had saved her soul, but grace was meant to carry her daily.

From Hustle to Grace

Nicole now teaches women to recognize when they’re on the hamster wheel of striving, shame, and self-effort — and how to step off. She calls it the “joy quotient”:

Awareness – Recognize the lie you’ve been believing (e.g., I am rejected, I am unworthy).

Pattern – See how that lie leads to shame, fear, and destructive cycles.

Exchange – Replace the lie with God’s truth at the throne of grace.

Freedom – Walk in renewed thoughts, actions, and results rooted in love.

Instead of hustling for worth, we begin living from the worth Christ has already secured.

For the Weary Woman

If you’ve been striving for approval, perfection, or “good enough” status — this conversation is for you. Nicole reminds us that:

Grace meets us at rock bottom.

Surrender is not giving up — it’s laying down what was never ours to carry.

True joy comes when we stop performing and start abiding.

As she says, “Working from God’s love changes everything.”

Reflection Questions

  1. Where am I striving for approval instead of resting in grace?
  2. What “I am” lies do I need to exchange for God’s truth?
  3. What would change in my life if I lived from God’s love instead of working for it?
