When Your Heart's "Check Engine Light" Comes On

Hey beautiful sisters! We’re continuing our Temple Talk series today with a conversation that has been stirring in both our hearts. You know those moments when something just feels off? Maybe you’re snappier than usual, feeling a low-grade anxiety you can’t shake, or just generally restless. It’s not a huge crisis, but enough to make you wonder, "What in the world is going on?" Today, we want to talk about how these ordinary, sometimes uncomfortable, feelings might just be God’s gentle invitation to slow down, lean in, and let Him reveal what’s truly stirring in your heart.

The Check Engine Light of the Heart

Have you ever had one of those "aha!" moments where you realize, "Wow, I haven't been myself lately"? Maybe you’re a little more impatient, prone to snapping at your husband over something small, or feeling anxious for no discernible reason. It’s like an emotional exhaustion you can’t quite explain. Often, our first instinct is to explain it away: "I’m just busy," "I’m stressed," "I need a vacation." And sometimes that’s true! But what if sometimes, these "off" feelings are more than just a passing mood?

Think about your car's check engine light. When it comes on, it's not the problem itself, but a signal that something deeper needs attention. We don't panic or assume the car is totaled, right? We just know we need to look under the hood. But when it comes to our hearts, we often ignore the signals. We become more anxious, critical, restless, or distant from God, yet we keep driving, distracting ourselves, staying busy, and convincing ourselves we’ll deal with it later. All the while, God might be gently whispering, "Sweet daughter, I’m not trying to condemn you; I’m trying to invite you." The signal isn't the problem; the signal is the invitation.

What Are These Signals Telling Us?

We’ve identified a few common "dashboard lights" that often flicker on in our hearts, serving as invitations from the Lord. These aren’t meant to make us hyper-aware or fearful, but rather more attuned to the Holy Spirit’s gentle nudges.

  1. Restlessness or Low-Grade Anxiety: This often feels like carrying something that was never yours to carry. It’s an invitation to surrender.

    • Prayer: "Lord, what am I holding that You’re asking me to surrender?"
  2. Snappiness, Irritation, or a Critical Spirit: Especially with those closest to you. This usually points to something underneath the reaction – a hurt, a fear, an unmet need.

    • Prayer: "Lord, what is my anger protecting, or what wound is it pointing to?"
  3. Spiritual Dryness or Distance from God: This can indicate something has built a wall between you and the Lord that you didn’t notice going up. Perhaps an offense, a compromise, or things you’ve consumed that have pulled you away.

    • Prayer: "Lord, search me. Show me what has built a wall between us that I didn't notice was going up."
  4. Comparison, Envy, or Constant Striving: This signals that your identity might have slipped from Him into something else, a pursuit of a title or external validation.

    • Prayer: "Lord, whose voice have I been listening to about who I am, and what does Your voice say about me?"

These signals are not signs of failure, but rather opportunities for deeper intimacy and healing with the Father. He doesn't want us to fix ourselves before coming to Him; He wants us to come broken, knowing He is the ultimate mechanic for our hearts.

What to Do When the Light Comes On

When you notice these signals, don't just push past them. Here are four steps to lean into God's invitation:

  1. Notice (Awareness): Stop the auto-numbing. Whether it's scrolling, staying busy, or venting to a friend before talking to God. Simply tell the Lord, "I'm noticing [fill in the blank]." He's not asking you to become self-aware for self-awareness' sake, but to be attentive to Him.

  2. Bring it to Him (Presence): Take it to His presence before taking it anywhere else. Unprocessed hearts often leak onto those we love most. Prioritize going to God first.

  3. Ask (Revelation): Invite Him to reveal what's underneath, not just to take it away. We often pray to feel better, but kingdom prayer asks Him to show us the root cause. Sit in stillness for at least five minutes with your journal open, no distractions. Expect Him to bring up a person, a memory, a scripture, a truth, or something hidden.

  4. Release it (Surrender): Surrender what He surfaces. If it’s sin, confess. If it’s a wound, forgive. If you’re drifting, repent. If you’re believing a lie, replace it with His truth. Renew your mind with His Word, and watch the signals dim as your heart becomes more rooted in Him.

Guard your heart above all else, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

Why Tending Your Heart Matters So Much

It’s easy to think tending to our hearts is just about our own spiritual growth, but it’s so much more. What’s happening inside of us always shows up somewhere. It impacts our marriages, our friendships, how we parent, how we lead, and how we respond under pressure.

  1. Spiritually: Ignored signals don’t stay small; they get louder. Everything – our words, patience, peace, relationships – flows from the condition of our hearts. Intimacy with God grows in the places we’re most tempted to hide. Every signal you follow deepens your trust in Him. The goal isn’t a "clean heart" by your own strength, but a surrendered heart that keeps coming back to Him.

  2. Relationally: The people closest to us pay the price for the signals we don’t take to the Lord. Our kids, husbands, and friends feel it when we don't process our hearts. A woman who regularly tends to her own heart with the Lord becomes a safe haven. She’s less reactive, more present, quicker to repent, and slower to project. This is how we break generational patterns—by letting God tend the roots that previous generations couldn't bring to Him. When we let God heal us, His love naturally overflows into the lives of those He’s entrusted to us.

When we start seeing ourselves through His eyes, we can then see others through His eyes too. There’s less judgment and more mercy. So, dear sister, the next time one of those dashboard lights comes on, pause. Bring it to Jesus. Ask Him, "Lord, what are You inviting me to notice?" Remember, the signal isn't the problem; the signal is the invitation.

Reflection Questions

  1. Which "check engine light of the heart" (restlessness, snappiness, spiritual dryness, comparison/striving) do you most often notice in yourself?
  2. What is your typical first reaction when you feel one of these signals? Do you tend to explain it away, distract yourself, or lean into God?
  3. Think of a recent time you felt "off." What was the underlying emotion or experience? How might God have been trying to get your attention?
  4. How might tending to your own heart more intentionally impact your closest relationships (with your spouse, children, friends, etc.)?
  5. What's one practical step you can take this week to "pause, bring it to Jesus, ask, and release" when a signal appears?
