We all have areas of our lives we would rather not talk about: the flaws, the shortcomings, and the repeated struggles that seem to surface again and again. For some, it is a sharp tongue or a quick temper. For others, it may be people-pleasing, overthinking, or the need to control. Sometimes it looks like boldness without compassion, empathy that leads to burnout, or resilience that quietly masks striving.
Here is the truth: What we often call our greatest weakness may actually be our greatest strength, simply unsurrendered to God.
In this episode of Spirit-Filled Girl Talk, we share how the very areas we once felt ashamed of were actually gifts from the Lord. Our boldness, communication, and drive were never the problem. When left in our flesh, they caused damage in our marriages, friendships, and even our health. When surrendered to God, those same traits became tools for healing, encouragement, and purpose.
From Weakness to Strength: A Shift in Perspective
One of the most life-changing statements we have ever heard was this:
“Your greatest weakness is simply your greatest strength that you haven’t yet surrendered to the Lord.”
That truth shifted everything. Instead of drowning in shame over our weaknesses, we began asking a different question: What if this struggle is actually a gift that needs refinement by Jesus?
Empathy, when unsurrendered, can lead to emotional exhaustion. When led by the Spirit, it becomes Christlike compassion. Boldness can come across as harsh or brash when unsurrendered, but when laid at God’s feet, it becomes courage to speak truth in love. Leadership can feel like control when driven by fear, but when surrendered to God, it becomes Spirit-filled influence that builds others up.
When we try to operate in our own strength, we risk burning out and hurting others. When we surrender our strengths to the Lord, He reshapes them for His glory and our growth.
The Power of the Pause
One of the most practical lessons we are learning is the power of pausing before we speak.
Our first reactions often flow from the flesh. Defensiveness, frustration, pride, or fear can take over quickly. When we pause, even briefly, and ask the Lord what is happening in our heart, everything changes.
That pause creates space for the Holy Spirit to guide our words. It allows us to speak in a way that reflects Jesus rather than reacting from emotion.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, O Lord. Psalm 19:14
Slowing down and inviting God into our responses transforms how we communicate with our spouses, friends, children, and community.
Friendship and Sisterhood in the Refining
God never intended us to walk this refining process alone. One of His greatest gifts is friendship and sisterhood.
When we are surrounded by Spirit-filled women who love Jesus, we find safe places for accountability. True friendship does not shame us for our weaknesses. It calls us higher. It helps us recognize what God is doing in us, even when we feel discouraged or stuck.
This is why we are so passionate about conversations that go deeper than surface-level girl talk. Honest conversations about faith, healing, identity, and surrender help all of us grow into more fully surrendered women.
Why This Matters for Your Health
You may be wondering what surrendering your strengths has to do with your health. The answer is everything.
Unhealed patterns like striving, perfectionism, harsh communication, or carrying everyone else’s burdens create chronic stress. Chronic stress impacts hormones, digestion, sleep, energy, and overall well-being.
When we learn to pause, surrender to God, and communicate with love, tension in our relationships decreases and peace begins to flow through our bodies. True healing is holistic. What happens in your heart and relationships will always affect your physical health.
An Invitation to Surrender
Your weaknesses do not define you. They are an invitation.
Instead of asking why you cannot fix this part of yourself, ask a different question: Lord, is this a strength You gave me that I have not yet surrendered back to You? How do You want to use this for Your glory?
When we surrender our gifts to God, He redeems them. He reshapes them. He uses them for His Kingdom purposes.
A Prayer for Surrender
Lord, thank You for the unique gifts You’ve given me. Forgive me for the ways I’ve tried to use them in my own strength. Today, I surrender them back to You. Quicken my heart when I misuse them, convict me quickly, and teach me to walk in humility. Use my life, my words, and my strengths for Your glory and the good of Your people. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Questions
- What is an area you've identified as a 'weakness' that, with a shift in perspective, could be seen as an unsurrendered strength or gift from God?
- How has the power of a 'pause' impacted your ability to respond in a way that honors God in a challenging situation?
- In what ways do you currently see unhealed patterns (like striving or perfectionism) affecting your physical health and overall well-being?
- What might it look like to lean more on Spirit-filled sisterhood for accountability and encouragement in your journey of surrender?
Final Encouragement
“Your greatest weakness is not your downfall. It may be your greatest strength, waiting to be surrendered.”
Do not let the enemy use it against you. Place it in God’s hands and watch Him transform it into something beautiful. And remember, you are not alone. We are walking this out too — in our marriages, friendships, health, and calling. Together, as Christian women pursuing deeper faith, sisterhood, identity, and purpose, we can learn what it truly means to live fully surrendered to God.
