Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Father Son and Holy Spirit: Deepening Your Connection

Have you ever stopped to think about which Person of the Trinity you feel most connected to? God the Father, Jesus the Son, or the Holy Spirit?

This question came up in a small group recently, and it stopped us in our tracks. None of us had ever been asked it before. At first, it felt intimidating. Then came an unexpected moment of clarity.

The truth is, many of us find it easier to connect with one Person of the Trinity than another. Often, our earthly relationships play a significant role in shaping that connection.

God the Father: Provider, Protector… or Distant?

For some, a healthy and close relationship with an earthly dad makes it easier to understand God as a loving Father. For many others, the opposite is true.

If your dad was absent, harsh, or overly strict, it can create a distorted picture of who God is. That was the case for both of us. Growing up, our dads loved us, but they parented out of fear. They became protectors, disciplinarians, and rule-keepers, but not always the tender and emotionally present figures we longed for.

Naturally, this shaped how we viewed God. He felt distant, stern, or unapproachable, much like the fathers we knew on earth.

But here is the truth. God is nothing like our earthly fathers. Scripture reminds us that perfect love casts out fear. He is not waiting to punish us. He longs to draw us close and be our safe place, our loving Papa.

The Holy Spirit: The Comforter and Nurturer

Others find it easier to connect with the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, Helper, and gentle guide, especially if they experienced nurturing mothers who modeled compassion.

That has been true for both of us. We have felt the Spirit’s presence most deeply in worship, prayer, and quiet moments when His comfort feels tangible and near. Looking back, it makes sense. Having mothers who embodied nurturing love gave us a framework for understanding the Spirit’s tender role in our lives.

But what if comfort and nurture were not part of your story? Friend, the Holy Spirit still meets you exactly where you are. He whispers truth into your heart and reminds you that you have never been alone and never will be.

Jesus: The Perfect Friend and Brother

Then there is Jesus, our Savior, Friend, and Brother.

For some, healthy sibling relationships or friendships make it natural to see Him this way. For others, friendship has been complicated by insecurity, rejection, or broken relationships.

If that is you, it may feel difficult to imagine Jesus as the faithful friend who never leaves. But that is exactly who He is. He is the Friend who not only walks with us but laid down His very life for us.

Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

When we truly grasp that, everything changes. Jesus is not just a historical figure who died for the world. He is a personal, loyal, steadfast friend who died for you.

Jesus died for you

Lies We Believe vs. Truth God Speaks

Our struggles to connect often come from lies we have believed.

The lie says God the Father is distant, angry, or unapproachable. The truth says He is a loving Papa who knows every hair on your head and cares deeply for you.

The lie says you are too much or not enough for real friendship. The truth says Jesus calls you worthy of His life, death, and resurrection.

The lie says you cannot connect with the Holy Spirit because you do not know what comfort feels like. The truth says the Holy Spirit is your Helper and Comforter, always near and always speaking peace.

Why This Matters

Understanding how our earthly experiences shape our spiritual connection helps us grow deeper with God. The good news is that no matter where you have struggled, whether with God as Father, Jesus as Friend, or the Holy Spirit as Comforter, there is healing, restoration, and freedom in His presence.

Do not settle for shallow connection, either with people or with God. He has more for you. Ask Him to reveal Himself in fresh ways. Invite Him to rewrite the narratives that have held you back.
